A Perez Hilton Generation

Perez Hilton is developing a sub culture of the worst kind of people imaginable. As someone who works in the music industry and needs to contently be up to date on what is going on online, I skim Perez Hilton for a few seconds a couple times a week. Every time I am on that site i get this sick to my stomach feeling. The things he posts and the way he carries himself is so tacky. He is like the most popular kid in the trailer park, thats just the reality.

I don’t want to turn this into a shit talking fest, because then I suppose I will be just as bad as him, but I wanted to point out his effects on American culture. What is mind blowing to me is that someone like Perez Hilton, an insecure man without any journalistic integrity, credibility or proper education in his field is far more culturally influential then the President of the United States or any significant moral figure in our culture today. It shows the extreme disconnect in the country as to what is “right and wrong” and the demise of credibility in mass media and our government. People no longer look up to those in positions they are supposed to look up to, instead they idolize people that traditionally have absolutely no qualities necessary to idolize. Its a complete demise of moral responsibility and a new wave of what is determined as “cool”. The para dime has shifted, and it fucking sucks.

Take a moment to read some of the comments on Perez’s website and you will get what I am talking about. Recently Casey from Hawthorne Heights passed away in his sleep, yet the kids who call Perez Hilton’s website their homepage have no regards to this tragedy. The problem is that Perez has made a spectical of so many situations, that they become not real. People who are avid visitors of any tabloid magazine have been “dumbed down” to the extent that informational intake is no longer about finding truth, but finding a few minutes of excitement to fill the void in their lives. Perez is breeding the worst type of generation, a type that has no separation between real and fake.

When the lines are blurred between reality and fantasy, danger happens. Kids will become more able to commit “immortal” acts (for lack of better word) because of the lack of understanding to what it is they are exactly doing. Kids will become more able to bring a gun to school or even commit suicide, merely trying to discover the romantic side of these acts, unknowing that they are actually doing things that have a reaction.

Now, I suppose many are reading this and saying “wow Jay, you sound like a conservative prick” and I suppose that statement would be somewhat accurate. With that said I am all for free speech, equality and for us having the free will to fuck up our lives in whichever way we find fit, but all I am doing here is stating a reality. Toss whatever arguement you want my way, hurl any insults but at the end of the day, there is a reaction to your choice of actions, wither you want to admit it or not. I am just pointing out what should be obvious, but thanks to people like Perez Hilton, it isn’t.

New Music Saturday

So I am in northern Arizona for the thanksgiving festivities, sitting by the fire listening to Neko Case, and I decided it was my job as a blogger to post a handful of my favorite recent musical discoveries for all of you to enjoy. I have done a few previous posts on some of these artists, but you could really use a recap.

NEKO CASE
Neko Case is one of my favorite artists of 2007. She has of course been making music for much longer than 2007, however I only recently really discovered her music and I am hooked. Very much in the vein of The Stills or Eisley.

BETTYE LAVETTE

A few days ago I made a post about Bettye but I figured I would post again in my new music saturday. Bettye has a wonderful voice and very honest lyrics that I find to be very rare in todays music. She is very much worth the few minutes of checking out.

NATHAN ASHER AND THE INFANTRY

Nathan Asher is an artist that I have been all about for some months now. Still unsigned, Nathan very much needs more music to make an impact with on the industry, but his “single” “Turn Up The Faders” really does it for me. By far one of my favorite songs of 2007.

Movie: Bella

I recently had the opportunity to view the critically acclaimed “indie film” Bella. Living in Los Angeles has it’s perks when it comes to movies as we are able to view many movies that are unavailable in other markets. Bella is that sort of a movie, although I do think this particular one is available if you search hard enough all over the country. I suppose I should recant my bragging rights about Los Angeles for this particular essay, but I wont because I really don’t care.

Bella was one of those movies that won some awards and the kids up in Silverlake love to love so they can say they love it. I highly doubt most of them actually have seen the movie, afterall going to movies isn’t cool, just talking about going to them is. If you don’t get what I am talking about, spend a few nights in Silverlake and you will.

Note: I love people in Silverlake, this is not a jab but merely a stereotypical generalization of a reality, wither that is good or bad you can judge. Plus I am not particularly “cool” in anyway way, so I can’t really claim I have any concept of what is sexy.

ANYWHO, Bella is a film about a girl who is faced with something that is a reality for many young twenty somethings, so perhaps this is why the reviews are top notch, as I suppose for many it’s an overwhelming relatable situation. Bella’s main character (played by Tammy Blanchard) finds out she is pregnant and is faced with the 2007 controversial question: Abortion or not. The movie takes her and new found friend Eduardo Verástegui on a journey reviling the history of Eduardo’s character Jose’s life and forcing Tammy’s character Nina to face this huge decision.

The movie ended up being a strong film. The dialog and plot line were rich and real which is rare in movies today. The best I can associate it with would be Garden State in the fact that this film is a strong dialog based film.

Girls Gone Wild founder Claims Abuse

Sometimes I wonder how people sleep at night doing what they do. I cringe when I hear stories of the scum of the earth, I just don’t get how people are the way they are. Regardless of religion, there is a set of moral standards that I think everyone can agree on, but some people just never got that memo.

Joe Francis is one of those people that make me sick. Francis is the founder and producer of the million dollar video series “Girls Gone Wild”, where he exploits young (often underage) drunk girls and makes them do sexual acts on camera. Sure these girls are pretty bad themselves and very much need to figure out that their lifestyle is not sexy in any way, but Francis’ lifestyle is so degrading and takes advantage of these situations.

The founder of “Girls Gone Wild” is now claiming he was abused during his stay in an Oklahoma jail on tax evasion charges (makes sense). Just reading about this case and this man makes me want to vomit. How on earth can he ever convince himself that he is a victim in any situation?

Thrice – The Alchemy Index

By far one of the best shows I’ve been to in 07. Thrice at the Wiltern opening for Brand New. I’ll admit this blog will be slightly biased because Thrice and Dustin Kensrue has been on my “favorite bands of all time – id drop my panties for them” list – but seriously give their new record a spin. It’s worth it. They’ve put out a four disc EP. One for each of the four elements. Fire and Water came out this Fall. Earth and Wind in the spring. Fire walks on the lines of metal, whereas Water runs on the other side of the spectrum. Ambient – Epic – I like.

Writers Strike = bye bye TV – hello ugc (well…even more of it)

So who thinks that television is going to stink in the next coming months due to the writers strike? In my opinion – Yes. But honestly – what I really care about is the impact it’s going to have on the online world and the potential increase in views of user generated content on the web. Television already has had to share it’s piece of the media pie with high traffic sites like the You Tubes’s and TMZ.Com’s of the world. Not only share it’s audience with the online realm, but has been forced to adapt to this new medium by creating platforms to house all their shows online to appease the new “on demand – i want to watch, when i want to watch it” generation.

My forecast – We’re about to see an increase in user generated content on the production side, as well as in viewer ship due to the repeat episodes we’re soon to see much of. (Which may be a “duh” to a lot of you) BUT – I have a good hunch that in the interim of the television hiatus – people will exponentially embrace user generated material and reality television (yes middle america too) and when the Writer’s strike is over and it’s time for new episodes of our favorite shows to start airing again, the increase in traffic on online portals will stay up, if not increase.

I’d love to see the neilson ratings before and after the strike. I predict – ratings will dip and these new numbers will become the standard in the future. Very similar to how major record labels now jump for joy if a record sells 100,000k , in comparison to a couple years ago when platinum records were a norm.

Copeland

Copeland has been one of my favorite artists for a long time. I don’t love everything they do, but their first record was a record that I still listen to constently from start to finish which is extremely rare for me. For that I can always appreciate their work and will always consider them one of my favorite artists.

Via The Militia Group, Copeland recently released a B-Sides record that I am very much happy with. If you are a fan of traditional Copeland music, I think you will enjoy the B-Side’s record. Check it out at the link below.

Featured Artist: Bettye LaVette

Soulful music has been recently popularize by the ever dramatic and popalicious Amy Winehouse, but the style has been around far longer than Amy has had breath in her longs. Bettye LaVette is one such artist who has been doing this for years and her authenticity shines in her beautiful music. At 61 years young, Bettye is still at the top of her game, creating a record that is filled with honesty and life lessons learned over the years.

Bettye recently released a new record on ANTI Records titled “The Scene Of the Crime”, which I would have to say is one of my favorite records of the year (although not in my top 10, she is only of my new appreciations I have learned of in the past few months).

Happy Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! It has been far to long since this has been updated, but it should be getting back on the roll soon. All three contributers here recently started new jobs so the focus has been on those. With that said I plan to get back into the swing of things and hopefully posting about things I enjoy talking and writing about (not 50 cent and britneys ugly face as has been the post popular topics on this site).

So enjoy your turkey, I will post a few new things here soon, if nothing else just to get the ugly Jenna Jamison picture out of my life.
